Government & Regulatory, Regional

Global Expertise, Local Knowledge

Led by Managing Partner Samuel Seow, the senior lawyers in our Government & Regulatory, Regional Practice Group have worked in some of the largest and most prominent law firms in Asia and the world.

We are instructed by multinational corporations from industries varying from food production to property development on the regulatory challenges in growing their presence in jurisdictions across South-East Asia. We also regularly advise governments on their international obligations and have represented states at international forums on some of their most significant issues (including two ongoing World Trade Organisation trade disputes).

Notwithstanding our global perspective, we recognise that an intimate understanding of local custom and nuance is crucial – particularly so in a region as heterogenous as South-East Asia. Through YSL Legal’s offices and affiliate teams, we have ready access to local-qualified lawyers from key commercial jurisdictions across the region, including China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

Practice Group

Navigating Complexities

Led by Partner Aaron Christian, we have a team of lawyers who cover the full spectrum of commercial litigation matters, and have litigated at the highest levels of the Singapore courts. We are committed to helping our clients achieve the best possible commercial and strategic outcomes. We are able to deftly handle all aspects of commercial litigation – from the initial correspondence, to the enforcement of judgment, and everything in between.

Our team represents our clients at all levels of trial and appellate litigation, and are equally comfortable handling hearings before specialised and administrative tribunals. We are equally adept at negotiation, conciliation, mediation, neutral evaluation, settlements and both domestic and international arbitration.

Our breadth of knowledge, expertise and experience includes:
– Construction and engineering;
– Insolvency and restructuring;
– Intellectual property disputes and infringement enforcement;
– Common law actions such as defamation and negligence;
– Shareholders, joint-venture and partnership disputes;
– Breach of directors’ and statutory duties;
– White collar crime, financial fraud, insider trading, breach of trust, cheating and forgery;
– Corporate governance and regulatory compliance; and
– International arbitration.

We recognise that an intimate understanding of local custom and nuance is crucial – particularly so in a region as heterogeneous as South-East Asia. Through YSL Legal’s offices and affiliate teams, we have ready access to local-qualified lawyers from key commercial jurisdictions across the region, including China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

German/European Practice

Led by our Counsel Patrick Dahm, our German/European Practice serves the legal needs of Asian enterprises in the European Union, particularly in Germany. This includes commercial law aspects as well as regulatory or administrative issues, and dispute resolution.

The members of the practice have taken deep roots in Southeast Asia, but they have not lost touch with their origins. They are native speakers of Europe’s four main languages: English, German, French, and Dutch. As experienced, dual-qualified lawyers they have a vast knowledge of business practices, customs and cultures both in Europe and Asia. They are qualified and admitted to practise Singapore law as well as EU, German and Dutch law. Our German/European Practice works closely with our Government and Regulatory Practice.

Simply put, our German/European Practice helps our clients build bridges and provides them with a competitive advantage.
